What is a Damascus signature?

McQuaide Watches

Turn a McQuaide watch on its side and you'll find something no other watch in the world has. Running along the case is a pattern of light and dark steel, formed in the forge and impossible to repeat. We call it the Damascus signature, and it's the reason no two Damascus Steel watches are ever the same.

In this article, we explain what Damascus Steel is, how a Damascus signature forms, and how we make sure the pattern on your watch belongs to you alone.

What is Damascus Steel?

Damascus Steel is a pattern-welded steel, made by forge-welding layers of different steels together, then folding, twisting and working them until the layers flow through the metal. When the finished steel is etched, the different steels react differently, revealing a pattern of contrasting bands.

How is Damascus Steel made for a watch case?

For our cases, we combine two grades of stainless steel, 316L and 304L. The layers are fused under heat and pressure, folded and shaped, then machined into a watch case and etched to bring the pattern to the surface. Because the pattern runs through the steel itself, it isn't a print or a coating. It's part of the case.

You can see the full process, from billet to finished pattern, in our article Forging beauty: the art of Damascus Steel in watchmaking.

Is Damascus Steel real or just a pattern?

Genuine Damascus Steel is forged, and its pattern is a result of the layers inside the metal. Some products described as Damascus only have a pattern laser-etched or printed onto the surface. A forged pattern is different: it's created by the steel itself, which is why it can never be copied exactly. Check out this infographic video below.

What is a Damascus signature?

A Damascus signature is the unique pattern on an individual McQuaide case. Every watch we make has one, and no two are alike. Some cases have distinct notches where the layers fold back on themselves. Others show waves that widen and narrow along the case. A rare few are almost perfectly symmetrical.

Why is the side profile the best place to see it?

The side profile of the case shows the pattern most clearly, running uninterrupted from lug to lug. It's also where the differences between one watch and the next are easiest to compare, so it's the view we use to record each watch's signature.

Why is every Damascus Steel watch unique?

Damascus Steel is notoriously unpredictable to make. Every fold, twist and strike shifts the layers in ways that can't be planned or repeated. Even if we set out to copy a pattern exactly, we couldn't. That unpredictability is what makes every Damascus Steel watch a one-off.

Can a Damascus Steel pattern be repeated?

No. A forged Damascus pattern depends on countless small variables in the forge, from temperature to the exact way each layer moves. The result is a pattern that exists once and only once.

What makes one Damascus signature different from another?

Here are three Q1-B dive watches, side by side. Each one was made the same way, yet each signature is entirely its own.

Q1-B number 4. Two notches break the flow of this pattern, one noticeably larger than the other. Neither sits evenly from the helium escape valve, giving the case a rhythm that's entirely its own.

Q1-B number 2. A single, deep notch sits just to the right of the helium escape valve. Around it, the waves draw close together, then drift wider apart, as if the steel couldn't quite settle.

Q1-B number 32. No notches. Just wave after wave, mirrored almost perfectly along the case. Symmetry like this is one of the rarest patterns the forge gives us.

How do you know your Damascus Steel watch is authentic?

Every McQuaide watch comes with a certificate of authenticity that records its Damascus signature.

What is on the McQuaide certificate of authenticity?

We photograph the side profile of every case and print it onto the watch's certificate of authenticity, matched to its serial number. The certificate comes in the box with every McQuaide watch. No one else will ever have the same pattern, or the same serial number, as you.

Where can you see Damascus Steel watches in person?

Photos only tell you so much. The pattern shifts as the light moves across it, and the best way to understand a Damascus signature is to see one on your own wrist. You can find us at watch shows throughout the year. See our events page for where we'll be next.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Damascus signature on a watch?

A Damascus signature is the unique forged pattern on an individual Damascus Steel watch case. At McQuaide, each signature is photographed from the side and printed on the watch's certificate of authenticity, matched to its serial number.

Are Damascus Steel watches unique?

Yes. Because forged Damascus Steel can't be controlled precisely, every case develops its own pattern. No two genuine Damascus Steel watches will ever look exactly the same.
